Column and thin‐layer chromatography revealed the presence of the following carotenoids in thalli of Dirinaria applanata from 13 different sites: α‐carotene, β‐carotene, β‐cryptoxanthin, lutein, 3′‐epilutein, zeaxanthin, antheraxanthin, canthaxanthin, astaxanthin, violaxanthin, mutatoxanthin, neoxanthin, capsochrome, fucoxanthinol, paracentrone and apo‐6′‐lycopenal. In the thalli of all 13 specimens of Dirinaria applanata β‐carotene, lutein, astaxanthin and violaxanthin were found as constant carotenoids. The total content of carotenoids ranged from 21.0 (from Mexico) to 54.9 μg g −1 dry weight (from Antilles).
