In the general characteristics of the family Valerianaceae the occurrence of “stellate hairs” described by the authors of Valeriana tomentosa Kunth and V. malvaceae Graebn. still remains unconsidered. Beyond their diagnostic value, however, it is interesting, that at least the specific ontogeny and anatomical structure of the “stellate hairs” of V. tomentosa corresponds very well with similar trichomes known for several other taxa of Dipsacales, namely species of Viburnum (Viburnaceae) and some Dipsacaceae ( Cephalaria, Scabiosa ).
