The new monotypic genus Kikuyuochloa, based on Pennisetum clandestinum , is erected. Contrary to the common view in Pennisetum clandestinum ( Kikuyuochloa clandestina ) 1–4(–6) unispiculate inflorescences each subtended by bristles are grouped in one cluster, the cluster representing the real inflorescence unit homologous to the partial inflorescence of Pennisetum . A basal bristled involucrum is absent in Kikuyuochloa ; the bristle configuration beneath the individual spikelets of Kikuyuochloa is not comparable to the bristled involucrum of Pennisetum .
