The root‐anatomy of 13 genera of Calamoideae, of the 22 genera accepted by UHL & DRANSFIELD (1987) has been studied. Although this subfamily seems to be homogeneous, there are many features in the roots which allow to distinguish the genera and it becomes evident, that Calamoideae show no close relationship to Coryphoid palms.
