Column and thin‐layer chromatography revealed the presence of the following carotenoids in the thalli of 29 lichen species from the Swiss Alps: α‐ and β‐carotene, β‐cryptoxanthin, lutein, 3′‐epilutein, zeaxanthin, lutein epoxide, antheraxanthin, aurochrome, auroxanthin, mutatochrome, mutatoxanthin, violaxanthin, cryptoflavin, flavoxanthin, luteoxanthin, neoxanthin, canthaxanthin, astaxanthin, fucoxanthinol and paracentrone. The total content of carotenoids ranged from 8.16 ( Diploschistes muscorum ) to 149.65 μg g −1 dry weight ( Solorina crocea ).
