Abstract Column and thin‐layer chromatography revealed the presence of the following carotenoids in the thalli of 20 lichen species from Northern Canada: β‐zeacarotene, α‐carotene, β‐carotene, β‐cryptoxanthin, zeaxanthin, lutein, 3′‐epilutein, antheraxanthin, lutein epoxide, canthaxanthin, astaxanthin, violaxanthin, mutatoxanthin, neoxanthin, rhodoxanthin, capsochrome, apo‐6′‐lycopenal, β‐apo‐8′‐carotenal and apo‐12′‐violaxanthal. The finding of β‐zeacarotene in the thalli of Peltigera aphthosa from the Yukon is the first report of this substance in lichens. The total content of carotenoids ranged from 19.04 μg · g −1 dry wt for Ochrolechia frigida to 50.27 μg · g −1 dry wt for Sphaerophorus globosus .
