The chemotaxonomy of Avicennia is studied. Though it shows a few variations in chemical features, the totality of evidence from diverse disciplines including the chemistry does not favour its paring off from Verbenaceae to an independent family of its own. Its retention as an integral part of Verbenaceae is adduced.
