The structure, distribution and taxonomic importance of trichomes in the Malpighiaceae have been reported. The development of well known malpighian hair (unicellular 2‐armed T‐shaped hair) has been reported in detail. The trichome evidence clearly suggests that the Malpighiaceae appears to be closely placed to Vochysiaceae and Trigoniaceae rather than to the other Geraniales (sensu lato) and Polygalales and lends support for their placement in a separate ordinal rank Malpighiales (excluding Polygalaceae).
