The leaves of fourteen species of Ipomoea have been analysed for amino acids. A total of 27 amino acids have been identified, including 14 protein 13 non‐protein ones. The dendrogram of cluster analysis indicates that Ipomoea is a heterogeneous taxon and shows eleven species‐clusters. The present data suggests that Merremia tuberosa is an integral constituent of Ipomoea and Quamoclit cannot be treated as a distinct genus. The treatment of Ipomoea batatas under a separate section is justified.
