The cuticular ornamentations of 33 species belonging to 25 genera of the family Euphorbiaceae have been studied by scanning electron microscopy. In this family seven main types of ornamentations, i.e. striate, reticulate, filigree, ridges, wrinkled, mixed and smooth types have been observed. The prominent type is striate. The present study does not elucidate a clear pattern of relationships between the sculpturings of the family and its taxonomic divisions at sub‐family level; however, the study indicates considerable diagnostic value of cuticular ornamentations at tribal and sub‐tribal level.
