Nineteen members of the Sapindaceae have been screened for their foliar flavonoids, phenolic acids, tannins, saponins and alkaloids. The family is heterogeneous in its chemical constitution. The Aceraceae and Hippocastanaceae are merged with the Sapindaceae. The intra‐familial classification of the Sapindaceae by Radlkofer gains support from the chemical data. Dodonea is found to be very distinct from the rest of the family and therefore the creation of a separate subfamily Dodoneoideae is suggested. Filicium decipiens finds a proper place in this family.
