Morpho‐anatomical investigations of the species Degenia velebitica have shown numerous xeromorphic and heliomorphic adaptations. The most clearly apparent adaptive features are the plant's study hairy leaf covering, compact structure of mesophyll and the preponderance of the palisade tissue as well as the well‐developed vascular system in the leaf and stem. Its survival on very windy screes is also aided by powerful tap‐roots and a dwarf life form with shortened internodes. D. velebitica plays an important role in forming the overgrowth and maintaining vegetation on mediterranean mountain screes of Velebit massif.
