The gross morphology, seed morphology and palynology of the four species of Portulaca in Nigeria have been studied. The colour and number of the corolla, stomatal types and seed coat morphology are of taxonomic importance. The mitotic chromosomes of two species, P. oleracea (2n = 54) and P. grandiflora (2n = 18) are described. A key to the species is provided.
