The present paper deals with the phylogenetic and systematic significance of petiolar anatomy of 44 species belonging to 22 genera of family Lamiaceae. Specific type of petiole vasculature has developed from a specific nodal configuration. The petioles have been categorised into 10 major types on the basis of the number of vascular bundles at the distal end of the petiole. Petioles with odd number of vascular bundles are more advanced. Evolution of petiole vascularization has taken place along different parallel lines. Some genera show specific norms of petiole vascularization but quite often different genera show the same type of petiole structure. Species of the same genus as well as individuals of same species also show considerable variation. It has been observed that the petiole vascularization has no systematic significance in the family Lamiaceae.
