Calliandra of the family Mimosaceae is represented in India, Bangladesh and Burma by two distinct species. An appraisal of generic relationship and morphological characters has been made from a study of literature and herbarium specimens. An artificial key is given and synonymy and descriptions are provided for each taxon. All specimens seen have been cited. Most species of the genus occur in tropical America. C. umbrosa ssp. umbrosa and ssp. griffithii are concentrated in the eastern Indian region which suggests that the genus has old secondary centre in the SE Asian region. These are probably in the course of extinction. Calliandra cynometroides has restricted distribution in Travancore and Tinnevelly ghat region, S. India. Both the species are generally found in evergreen forests.
