Vessels in 12 genera, 58 species of the Oleaceae and 11 genera and 18 species of the Verbenaceae are described. In both the families vessels fall under three categories: long, medium, and short, with similar disposition and number of perforation plates. In the Oleaceae simple and scalariform and in the Verbenaceae only simple perforation plates are noticed. Spiral side wall thickening of metaxylem vessels observed in the Oleaceae is absent in the Verbenaceae. Similarly border pitted side wall thickening of the metaxylem seen in the Verbenaceae is absent in the Oleaceae. The vessels vary in their size in both the families. Vessel studies add one more evidence for retention of the genus Nyctanthes in the Oleaceae.
