This paper comprises the result of morphological, experimental research concerning axial ramification of the culm of species Festuca pratensis Huds., F. rubra L., Zerna inermis (Leyss.) Lindm., Poa pratensis L., Echinochloa crus‐galli (L.) R. et Sch., grown from seeds buried at different depths. It was recorded that, both the ramification type of the culm, as well as the localization within the soil of the tillering zone are not affected by the depth at which sowing was effected. The differetiation and the growth of the buds and ramification culm and tillers are however stimulated by moderate depths of 1–2 cm. In species with rhizomes the sowing at great depths (3 cm) favoured the differentiation and the growth in particular of plagiotropic tillers, while at moderate depths (1–2 cm) both the orto‐ as well as plagiotropic ones develop at an equal measure, while at a superficial depth the total number of tillers is very small and in all the cases they present an ortotropic growth.
