The structure, development and classification of trichomes in 40 genera and 112 species of the Polemoniales are presented. The vegetative and floral trichomes fall under three catagories: Eglandular, Glandular and Glandular‐cum‐eglandular. In all twenty four trichome types: 11 eglandular, 12 glandular and 1 glandular‐cum‐eglandular are observed. All the types originate from a single papillate epidermal cell even from organ to organ within the same plant and the gradation from simple to complex is noticed. The three lines leading to Polemoniales, Boraginales and Solanales are distinct. Separation of Ehretiaceae from Boraginaceae is not fully justified.
