The distribution areas of the species of the lichen genus Squamarina in Europe have been mapped. The most primitive species, in the sect. Petroplaca , grow on slightly calcareous rocks. The derived ones (of the sect. Squamarina ) grow on calcareous rocks or in rock fissures or rarely on open soil. The species of sect. Petroplaca and therefore their areas are badly known. All the species of sect. Squamarina have their centre in the mediterranean area, some ( Squ. gypsacea, Squ. lamarckii ) ascend highly to the alpine zones of the alps and other South and Central European high mountains. Some species ( Squ. crassa, Squ. lentigera ) are distributed in the lowlands from the mediteranean countries up to Scandinavia, but occur on very dispersed places in steppe‐like vegetation on calcareous soil or rocks. Some species ( Squ. concrescens, Squ. oleosa, Squ. periculosa, Squ. provincialis, Squ. stella‐petraea ) are confined to the mediterranean region; on species ( Squ. nivalis ) is only known from some parts of the alps, growing on soil derived from calcareous schists and similar substrata in the alpine zone.
