A review is given of the various national requirements and test procedures concerning testing and classification of smoke produced in the case of a fire in rolling stock. A comparison of the various test methods is made using the relevant available literature. The toxic potency philosophy of SC3 ‘Toxic Hazard in Fire’ from ISO TC92 is used to provide a concept for assessing the possible smoke hazard in the case of a fire.
