In recent years, foundations have begun to think more holistically and to support collaboration across organizations. One form of collaboration, and the focus of the case study described in this issue, is the collective impact initiative, where a foundation convenes organizations from different sectors around a shared agenda. But how are evaluations designed in this context? This chapter introduces four theorists who, in this issue, translate their theories into practice to help us answer that question. To provide context for their individual chapters, the Evaluation Theory Tree is used to frame how the theorists were selected and introduce each of them in greater detail.
