The α − κ − μ fading channel is a generalized fading model that incorporates the nonlinearity and nonhomogeneous scattering behavior of the propagation medium. In this paper, we investigate the performance of a signal space diversity (SSD)–based cooperative decode‐and‐forward relay scheme over α − κ − μ fading channels. In particular, we derive the novel closed‐form expression of the average symbol error rate for the SSD‐based cooperative relay scheme. Capitalizing on this, we quantify the diversity order of SSD‐based cooperative decode‐and‐forward scheme over α − κ − μ fading channels. We compare the analytical results with the results obtained through Monte Carlo simulations to validate our theoretical results.
