ABSTRACT A highly reliable multi‐wavelength optical access network architecture based on single‐fiber and tangent rings is proposed. With the proposed architecture, both data convergence and protection can be realized. The primary ring can provide protection for the remote nodes (RNs) connected with its feeder fibers. The design of the RN used as the tangent point can realize the wavelength adding and dropping between the two tangent rings and it also realizes the network expansion of the optical access network. The protection of the RNs in sub‐ring can be realized by controlling the corresponding switches. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
