Summary The electric vehicle promotion in the backdrop of environment and climate issues is very important. In this paper, bidirectional converter for an electric vehicle battery charging along with features to mitigate the harmonics and reactive power in a residential installation is presented. It consists of adaptive transverse filter for the detection of fundamental component of the load current. The additional tasks are assigned to an electric vehicle charger for power quality improvement. This leads to reduction in cost for utility and a revenue generating scheme for the vehicle owner. Thus, the power quality indices are evaluated for the bidirectional interface (inherent to the on board power electronic equipment of the vehicle) in charging and discharging modes of the battery. The performance of the proposed converter is validated with the prototype system of same specifications. The performance results are obtained during charging and discharging modes with steady‐state and dynamic conditions.
