Bacterial mineralization of [7‐ 14 C]benzo[ a ]pyrene (B a P) to 14 CO 2 was enhanced by the presence of nonaqueous phase liquids (NAPLs). Mineralization of B a P was affected differently by different NAPLs, and the mode of enhancement of mineralization by a NAPL most likely occurred by a combination of cometabolic and physical effects. Mineralization was enhanced to the greatest extent when B a P was dissolved in a high‐boiling distillation product of diesel fuel.
