Several biodegradation flask systems were evaluated to assess the effects of flask shape and volume and length of incubation on the recovery of 14 CO 2 . During a 6‐h incubation period, it was demonstrated that the recovery of 14 CO 2 decreased as the volume of the flask (50 ml to 2 L) and the length of the diffusion path increased. Increasing the incubation time improved the performance of flasks, which were relatively inefficient at 6 h. Selected flask systems were further assessed, measuring the extent of CO 2 evolution from nonradiolabeled linear alkylate sulfonate and glucose by a mixed inoculum.
