Binge eating disorder affects a significant proportion of obese individuals seeking treatment. Current approaches to the treatment of obesity can often frustrate, even exacerbate binge eating. Clarification of associated eating disturbances and description of the syndrome of binge eating disorder are discussed. A proposed treatment for group psychotherapy is described, based on effective cognitive‐behavioural therapy of bulimia nervosa.
