Abstract Close‐contact melting processes of phase change material (PCM) inside a horizontal rectangular capsule are studied. The PCM is heated by the capsule at constant heat flux at the top and isothermally at the bottom, and the sides are adiabatic. The theoretical formulas of the dimensionless melting rate and the thickness of the liquid layer during the heat transfer process are obtained by analysing, which is convenient for engineering predictions. Finally, the influences on the melting process are discussed, and conclusions are drawn.
