The paper first assesses the criteria for dividing the numerous and various photovoltaic (PV) applications into homogeneous categories. With respect to these, a detailed analysis of the market is thus carried out to identify the main market sectors and their respective dynamics. Four application areas have been singled out as market segments and, by separating them from disturbance factors such as government commissions, the relevant evolution has been determined for each one. All these provide a comprehensive description of the present PV commercial diffusion and yield useful indications of the next growth stage. According to the state of PV research and development, the results obtained show that, in the near term, radical changes in the market trend can be excluded, but nevertheless the present stable expansion will be roughly maintained.
