Abstract A ranking of ten agricultural and forestry residues was carried out in terms of their suitability for biocoal production. The residues considered were paddy husk, paddy straw, sawdust, sugar cane bagasse, cotton stalk, corn cob, groundnut shell, cassava stalk, coconut husk and coconut shell. Ranking was carried out on the basis of annual production of the residues and the estimated cost of biocoal produced from them. Five residues that were found to be economically feasible for biocoal production, in their decreasing order of attractiveness, are coconut shell, sawdust, paddy husk, coconut husk and groundnut shell. The remaining residues were found to be unattractive for biocoal production mostly owing to their prohibitively high biocoal production costs.
