The flow losses associated with operation of a rotating sleeve expander depend on the rotational speed as well as flow rate and geometry. In this work, the proper width of the ports is determined for a chosen speed so that expansion takes place from a design value of the inlet pressure to atmospheric exhaust pressure. The proper split in length between the inlet and exhaust is also identified. This split is obtained from a minimum in the sum of losses associated with inlet and discharge. This optimum performance is found to be attractively high and is given as a function of speed and pressure ratio.
