Expressions are obtained for calculating the fraction of insolation absorbed by each plate of a cover system for solar thermal devices having n non‐identical plates in the presence/absence of an absorbing surface below the cover system. The average angle of incidence, averaged over 277 clear days of 1974, is obtained for the absorbing surface and for a cover system having one, two or three plates.
