At present, big projects for promoting the development of new energy resources are being conducted on a national scale by both the Ministry of International Trade and Industry and the Ministry of Education in Japan. This paper outlines the state of the art in hydrogen production research supported by these projects. Results of electrolysis and thermochemical methods are described and the target required to implement the hydrogen society is discussed.
