Abstract A discrepancy is reported whereby laboratory measurements of the COP h of air‐to‐water heat pumps yield performace data which are significantly inferior to seasonal values as measured in the field. A mechanism is proposed to account for this and example calculations show that improvements of up to 20 per cent can be expected over normal laboratory estimates.
