The processes which take place in the direct conversion cells of nuclear fission energy into electrical energy are investigated. Based on the experimental results obtained at the Central Institute of Physics, Bucharest, it is shown that the use of the catastrophe theory is needed to describe an adequate model for the cells' behaviour. Three functioning models of the cells with electrostatic suppression of the secondary electrons are described. It is shown that, in these cases, the fold and cusp catastrophe model are sufficient. The description in terms of the catastrophe theory allows the choice of some parameters in order to overcome the experimental difficulties with the purpose of obtaining higher voltages and acceptable efficiencies.
