Research, development and application of sustainable energy technologies are essential in solving today’s global energy challenges in link with the reduction of greenhouse gases. Great strides are currently being taken to transform our rather problematic energy systems into sustainable ones and increase access to sustainability for a better and cleaner 21st century. Realizing its global impact in different areas, which relate to issues of energy and environment, various efforts are made to implement new technologies and policies to overcome these formidable challenges. The 7th international conference on sustainable energy technologies (SET2008) provided an excellent forum for engineers, scientists, entrepreneurs, decision makers and energy professionals to exchange information and ideas worthwhile to share and promote in resolving imminent global issues related to energy and environment. It was held on August 24–27, 2008 in Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Seoul, Korea. Three hundred and fifty-four delegates from 30 countries have attended the Conference. SET 2008 set an excellent stage for reviewing the present state-of-the-art low carbon technologies and discussing the proper direction to take in the development of sustainables as our legacy to the coming generations in this 21st century. The selected papers of this special issue introduce some valuable progresses made in the mainstream of harnessing natural energy resources, whose topics include:
