A method of obtaining the response of a non‐linear system is proposed, which involves imposing the solution upon the equations of motion for a linear system and solving using selected modes of vibration. Contribution from the remaining modes of the system is included in terms of their quasi‐static response. The method is developed and illustrated with reference to a system with material non‐linearity and special reference is given to the dynamic analysis of embankment dams.
