Abstract We develop a statistical model for the bias resulting from designing an air quality monitoring network with the aim of finding large values, and then using the data obtained in studies of health effects of air quality. Appropriate conditional distributions are shown to be well‐known generalizations of the normal one. Theoretical results are applied to an ozone monitoring network in the state of Washington, USA.
