Abstract Obtaining the probability function is a problem in the compound Poisson process. In this study, the explicit probability function of the compound Poisson process is derived. By means of written macros, some numerical examples are also given to illustrate the usage of the probability function. Also as an application, 94 destructive earthquakes having surface wave magnitudes M s  ≥ 5.0 and their aftershocks within one month occurred in Turkey between 1903 and 2005 are considered. By using this data set, the probability function of the total number of aftershocks is obtained. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
