In August 2018, the president of the United States instructed trade negotiators to impose 25% tariffs on $200 billion of Chinese exports. One month later, additional tariffs were announced, making the total number of Chinese goods affected by tariffs $250 billion. China's retaliation, also announced in August 2018, imposed tariffs of $60 billion on American imports. Tariffs now cover approximately two‐thirds of the countries’ bilateral trade in goods.
