In 2007, I experienced something that changed my outlook on summer melt. That was the year Samantha showed up for new student orientation but she wasn't on any of our student lists. All of us at the small liberal arts college where I worked at the time scrambled to find out the problem. Eventually, Samantha's mother revealed she had not paid her deposit. Samantha had attended class at another institution the week before but was unhappy there so she wanted to try our college. Samantha's story ended well for her and for us — she enrolled and graduated in four years. But the situation leaves a lot of unanswered questions about how the other institution lost her to summer melt.
