The first EMBO workshop on Emerging Themes in Infection Biology was held last June in the South of France. It gathered scientists working on various pathogens from viruses and bacteria to larger eukaryotic fungi and parasites. Topics included not only the crosstalk between pathogens and their hosts but also the tools researchers are using to study and image such cellular and molecular conversations. “ So it is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you can win a hundred battles without a single loss .” The Art of War, Sun Tzu
