It is becoming increasingly clear that the microenvironment of a tumor can affect many tumor characteristics including the response to therapeutical intervention. Therefore, to fully understand tumor development and progression, a deeper knowledge of the communication between cancer cells and their stroma is needed and some of the open questions in this field will be discussed at an EMBO / EMBL symposium held in the beginning of M ay 2014 in H eidelberg.
