Continuous denitrification of a model solution was carried out in a honeycombed gel bioreactor using immobilized Paracoccus pantotrophus DSM 65 over a period of seven weeks. Supply of nitrate was varied during operation to determine the nitrate degradation rate as a function of nitrate concentration. The experiments have shown that by entrapping living microorganisms into a monolithic block of κ‐Carrageen gel a delicate biological system can gently be transformed into a rugged apparatus.
