A recent theory of electrophoresis of “soft” particles, i.e. , polyelectrolytecoated colloidal particles (Ohshima, J. Colloid Interface Sci. 1994, 163 , 474–483), is reviewed. This theory unites two different electrophoresis theories for rigid colloidal spherical particles and for spherical polyelectrolytes. An example is given of the analysis of electrophoretic mobility data on hydrogel‐layer‐coated latex particles.
