The procedure of Heukeshoven and Dernick for silver staining of proteins in polyacrylamide gels is simplified by applying Farmer's redücer before impregnation with silver nitrate and rinsing the gel in 2.5 % sodium carbonate instead of distilled water. This modification yields pattern of good contrast without a destaining‐restaining step.
