Xanthate adsorbs on pyrite surface at mildly acidic pH, rendering mineral surface hydrophobic. By far, the electrochemical behavior of pyrite exposed to cyanide‐bearing solution has been reported in alkaline media. The impact of cyanide on the chemisorption of xanthate on pyrite in mildly acidic media is unclear. The present study clearly pictured the interfacial processes in pyrite‐xanthate‐cyanide system at pH 5 via methods of cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). It is determined that cyanide blocks the formation of xanthate layer on pyrite surface over a broad range of potential, although the oxidation of xanthate in solution almost remains unaffected. The pyrite surface upon xanthate adsorption is poisoned by cyanide with the formation of iron cyanide complex.
