Abstract The catalytic reduction of bromate at vitreous carbon electrodes modified with a molybdenum oxide film at pH 3 has been investigated further. In addition, the reduction has been investigated at lower pH using molybdenum oxide films formed in situ from solutions containing both Mo VI and BrO   3 − . It is shown that in both systems, the variation of the current for bromate reduction with potential passes through a maximum and, hence, at more negative potentials, the surface is markedly less active for bromate reduction. With Mo VI in solution, a recovery in the catalytic activity slowly occurs and this effect has also been investigated.
