Diethyldithiocarbamate (Et 2 DTC) is not polarographically reducible, but in complex combination with cobalt two prewaves are formed in ammonia buffer. These prewaves are due to catalytic cobalt and hydrogen discharge and they are useful for analytical purposes in the determination of Et 2 DTC with high sensitivity (2 × 10 −6 −1 × 10 4 M). The effects of Co II , ammonium hydroxide, and ammonium chloride concentrations on the catalytic waves are described. A mechanism for the formation of the prewaves is proposed, in which adsorption plays a prominent part. Suitable conditions for analytical applications are described.
