Smoothed operation of the SMDE is achieved by activating the mercury valve, detecting the natural mercury drop fall, and closing the valve after a predetermined interval. Constant area static mercury drops are obtained by this protocol without the need to resort to a mechanical knocker. This technique has proven very useful for flow electrochemical detection systems.
